Advocate for a more just world
Today’s Gospel reading is short, but perhaps one of the most powerful nonetheless. It’s a message that remains important, especially in today’s world. If one per cent of the population possesses a greater share of the wealth of the world than 99 per cent of the population combined, then how much more should be asked of them? And yet, across the world, we see billionaires asking those in power (or actively taking roles themselves) to cut spending to the poorest to fund tax cuts for the rich.
The widow in the temple reminds us how distorted our world is, but the reading also reminds us that each of us have a role to play in making it better. We can all advocate for a more generous and just distribution of resources in our world. And our own contributions to helping the poor might be small in worldly terms, but they’re not small in the eyes of God.
