ANZAC Day

Let us not lose sight of the Resurrection
ANZAC Day in the Easter season presents us with an apparent contrast. It’s not unlike how it feels recalling the first martyr, St Stephen, the day after Christmas. Yet, these apparent tensions draw us back to the fullness of the Easter story. In John chapter 12 we are reminded that certain deaths give rise to new life, they yield ‘a rich harvest’. In the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus, all things are drawn into the possibility of new life.
This is not to glorify death or minimise its horror. We are not so far from Good Friday; we are never too far from it. Today we recall deaths that in so many cases seem to have been without purpose, without a redemptive narrative. We must sit quietly with that sense of loss and despair. But we must not lose sight of the Resurrection, the mystery of hope.
