About Today Readings

St Louis IX; St Joseph Calasanz

1 Thessalonians 1:1-5, 8-10. The Lord takes delight in his people – Ps 149:1-6, 9. Matthew 23:13-22.

Woe to you blind guides

Kenneth: You certainly served it up to the scribes and Pharisees, Jesus, but were they all like that?

Jesus: Of course not, Kenneth, but in my day some acted as God’s gatekeepers, deciding who was in and who was out, and what God loved and didn’t. In doing so they made God my father seem as mean as themselves. That was unforgiveable.

Kenneth: So was it really the way they saw God that was wrong?

Jesus: Yes, Kenneth, they shut God’s open door against people who longed for him and made their followers just as sour. They could never accept a God who loved tenderly and refused to hold our sins against us. And they also tinkered with Moses’ Law to make it easy for them and their mates to game it for their own gain. They blasphemed against a God who meets our longing with an even greater longing for us.
