About Today Readings

Our Lady Help of Christians

Ecclesiasticus 4:11-18. Blessed be the name of the Lord for ever – Ps 112(113):1-8. 1 Corinthians 1:18-25. John 19:25-27.

We pray for our families

Earlier in the Scriptures, Jesus’ brothers and sisters come to speak to him, thinking he had lost his mind. When Jesus hears they’re there, he replies, ‘Who are my mother and brothers?’ He then gestures to those with him, saying that whoever does the will of God is his ‘brother and sister and mother’.

It’s beautiful that in one of his last moments, Christ makes this seeming brokenness whole. He tells his disciple that Mary is his mother, and tells Mary that the disciple is his son. There is no fracture in his family – all are reconciled.

Today, we pray that Christ might also heal fractures in our own families and show how all of us can be reconciled under God.
