St Catherine of Alexandria
Apocalypse 14:1-5. Lord, this is the people that longs to see your face – Psalm 23(24):1-6. Luke 21:1-4.
Do not undervalue what we offer
I love this reading. It speaks to me of our Lord’s compassion, understanding and intimate knowledge of us. There are times when we are so weary, so weighed down by the demands of life, that our prayer seems sparse and our efforts to spend time with Jesus, paltry. We may know people who attend daily Mass, are in Rosary groups, do volunteer work and seem to contribute a lot. What Our Lord is asking us, I think, is to try not to compare. Try not to undervalue what we offer, when all we have left is the time between when our last child goes to bed and the assignment we need to finish by tomorrow. We give him that time. We offer him our intentions. We pray a prayer of thanks in our tiredness, and as we crawl into bed exhausted, we make the sign of the cross in order to connect with him. He loves your two coins, because that was all you had to give, and he is grateful.
