About Today Readings

Daniel 9:4–10. Lord, do not deal with us as our sins deserve – Psalm 78(79):8–9, 11, 13. Luke 6:36–38.

Only God knows

How delicious it can feel to be judgy! If only that person knew as much as me, they would not be in that situation. I am far superior to that other person, too. Why focus on my own shortcomings? It is far more comforting to look at what other people are doing wrong and to reassure myself that I know better.

Of course, it can come as a shock to the system when I get plunged into that exact situation and it turns out to be much harder than I thought it would be.

I’m slowly learning to avoid the delicious but ultimately unsatisfying practice of judging others with my simple formulas that only work in theory. Instead, I’ve come to understand that only God knows the hidden and complex struggles that a person might be dealing with, and try to practice mercy instead.
