About Today Readings

St Gregory of Narek

Leviticus 19:1-2, 11-18. Your words, Lord, are spirit and life – Psalm 18(19):8-10, 15. Matthew 25:31-46.

We are judged on how we treat those less fortunate

The two striking things from the excerpt from Leviticus are that we must be holy because God is holy, and we must love our neighbour as ourselves. These summarise the Ten Commandments and pre-empt the two great commandments given by Jesus. In Matthew’s Gospel for today we get a glimpse of what the final judgment will be like. It does not sound like human judgment at all; it holds us closely to love of neighbour because that is what God wants.

We are judged on how we treat those less fortunate than ourselves, not how much we pray and ritualise our understanding of God. Praise is hollow unless our love of God is shown in our love of neighbour.
