Co-heirs with Christ

Historically, English inheritance laws favoured the eldest son. The system of primogeniture dictated the eldest son would get the entirety of the father’s estate, leaving little or nothing for younger sons, while daughters would get a dowry on their wedding and would then need to rely on their husbands for care, wellbeing and monetary support. [The English throne always passed to the male heir first, no matter if there was an older sister, but this was changed in 2013 to allow for the eldest to inherit, no matter the sex.] In today’s First Reading, St Paul tells us that there is no seniority when it comes to God. God’s favour is not doled out to the eldest, or to any one in particular. We are all ‘heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ’. Together, we share his sufferings but also share his glory.
