About Today Readings

St Vincent de Paul

Zechariah 8:1-8. The Lord will build up Zion again, and appear in all his glory – Psalm 101(102):16-21, 29, 22-23. Luke 9:46-50.

We pray that God will find a way to use our skills

Humility, almost by definition, isn’t something that people brag about. Yet a sense of humility is an important attribute to have if we are to be authentic in our discipleship.

In today’s reading, Jesus addresses an argument about status among his disciples by calling for humility. The least of them, he says, is the greatest.

Many saints are recognised for their humility. St Alphonsus Rodriguez was a Spanish lay Jesuit brother who was told he wasn’t educated enough to be a brother or priest, but still dedicated his life to serving his community as a doorkeeper.

We pray today for a sense of humility in our own vocation, and that God might find a way to use even our least skills in service of the Kingdom.
