For God, all things are possible
No matter how hard we try to be good Christians there is always something that reminds us of our limitations and disordered attachments. The rich young man’s problem is not that he is rich but that he is attached to his possessions and is convinced that simply by following all the commandments he can save himself. The focus of his energy is on the wrong place. Rather than trust in God’s ability to save him, he is determined to do it on his own. In pointing out his attachment to his riches, Jesus highlights the impossibility of saving one’s self without the grace of God.
Such thinking underlies a number of heresies that deny the role of grace as the key in freeing us from what impedes our relationship with God. While we must never give up trying to free ourselves from disordered attachments, we must not forget that God is always offering the grace to bring his good work in us to fulfilment.
