Spiritual greatness

Do you remember the day we were arguing about who was the greatest and most deserving in our group? And Jesus sat there quietly among us. Until he gestured a child over, telling us that we must welcome the child.

How do we hope and trust in God when terrible things happen? The testing of Job begins with the destruction of his property and the people dearest to him. He has nothing left but the hair on his head and the clothes on his back, yet even these he removes to declare that he intends to leave the world in the way he arrived. He praises rather than blames God for his lot in life. By earthly measures, Job has been a great and prosperous man. But in being stripped of everything, we see emerging in him a kind of spiritual greatness. The disciples, busy arguing about who is the greatest, hear from Jesus that to be great is in having little yet loving greatly. In welcoming children and strangers, remaining humble and oriented to peace and acceptance: ‘Whoever is not against you is for you.’
