Live in the light
During the Octave of Christmas, a time when we are encouraged to immerse ourselves more deeply in the mystery and joy of the Incarnation, the Lectionary uses the first letter of John for the third, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh days of the Octave. It is worth spending the time to sit and read chapters 1 and 2. ‘We are writing these things so that our joy may be complete.’ The completion of our joy can only be in the true knowledge of the light and the truth brought to us through Christ. Several times John refers to lying because that takes one into the darkness. If, however, we live in the light we do not need to be afraid of stumbling because we can see where we are going. We also know that if we slip into the darkness through sin, Christ has already saved the whole world.
