About Today Readings

Monday in Holy Week

Isaiah 42:1-7. The Lord is my light and my salvation – Psalm 26(27):1-3, 13-14. John 12:1-11.

They prepared a dinner for him . . .

Over a scene of domestic conviviality in the home of Martha, Mary and Lazarus at Bethany the shadow of the cross falls. The contemplative Mary’s extravagant gesture in anointing the feet of Jesus with costly ointment in the presence of Judas the betrayer directs our thoughts to the imminent death and the even more extravagant ritual of the anointing of Jesus’ whole body by Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea.

Jesus died that all people, including the ever-present poor he spoke of, might enjoy the riches of abundant life. In this he left us, in Peter’s words, an ‘example, so that we should follow in his steps’ (1 Peter 2:21).

Lord, help me to be more generous and to see your face where it may most surely be found – in all who suffer.
