Ss Michael, Gabriel & Raphael
Daniel 7:9-10, 13-14. In the sight of the angels I will sing your praises, Lord – Ps 137(138):1-5. John 1:47-51.
Messengers of God
Over time angels have received good and bad press. In scripture they are all referred to as male, but somehow in the past few centuries we have morphed them into feminine figures who do not inspire. The three angels named for this feast had particular roles for the divine. As we hear in Apocalypse, Michael was the great warrior who defeated the dragon. Gabriel was the bringer of the Good News for the Annunciation (Luke 1:26-38) and Raphael, in the Book of Tobit, is the healer. The psalm also associates angels with the power and dominion of God. Jesus tells Nathanael that he will see the angels of God ascending and descending above the Son of Man. Angels are deeply part of our sacred mythology and bring ancient understandings of their presence as the power of God and as messengers of God. Indeed, the Greek word for angel means messenger.
