About Today Readings

St Thomas

Ephesians 2:19-22. Go out to all the world and tell the Good News – Psalm 116(117). John 20:24-29.

In praise of seekers of truth

I was at an event once, where a group of presenters was asked for their responses to today’s Gospel reading. The last of the presenters was a journalist, and he said that as far as he was concerned, Thomas was a great example of his profession.

To me that’s the point of today’s Gospel. It’s natural for anyone to doubt that Jesus really rose from the dead. Thomas gives voice to those doubts. Against this, we are given the evidence of the marks of crucifixion itself on Jesus’ body. If we didn’t have this story, if we didn’t have Thomas’ doubts, then we wouldn’t have this evidence today.

So today I would like to give thanks to the journalists, and others who gather the evidence of history, to help satisfy the doubts and curiosities of future generations. May their commitment to asking difficult questions and seeking truth continue to help enlighten the world.
