About Today Readings

St Charles Lwanga & Cc

2 Peter 1:2-7. In you, my God, I place my trust – Psalm 90(91):1-2, 14-16. Mark 12:1-12.

You will have to do your utmost

Today’s first reading is itself a prayer. ‘May you have more and more grace and peace as you come to know our Lord more and more.’ The phrase ‘more and more’ is beautiful. It implies a journey of a thousand steps as each day we venture a little further into the mystery of God’s love. Life itself is the place God seeks to meet us. This doesn’t just happen by accident. We must make an effort if we are to develop the openness of heart which allows us to encounter the divine. The letter of Peter says, ‘you will have to do your utmost’. The life of faith is not always easy. But slowly and surely the faith we start with can grow and blossom into goodness, understanding, self-control, patience, kindness and ultimately love. It starts, as the Psalm reminds us, by trusting God to hold the map as we do the driving.
