Ecclesiasticus 17:24-29. Let the just exult and rejoice in the Lord – Ps 31(32):1-2, 5-7. Mark 10:17-27.
Living according to God’s commands
Human work reflects our relationship with God, as seen in Ecclesiasticus, where his love and guidance lead us to righteousness. The psalm highlights the joy of forgiveness and reconciliation, reminding us that the ‘work of human hands’ goes beyond physical labour – it also includes repentance and the pursuit of righteousness. By following our vocation, we combine work with our spiritual journey toward God.
The rich young man in the Gospel struggles to reconcile his material wealth with God’s will. True ‘work of human hands’ is not measured by possessions but by living according to God’s commands, when our work serves others and his kingdom. This is especially true for those in caring professions, who find fulfillment in serving others. Once a vocation is discovered, life may not always be easy, but a sense of contentment or fulfillment signals you are on the right path.
