1 John 2:12-17. Let heaven and earth exult in joy! – Psalm 95(96):7-10. Luke 2:36-40.
Give thanks to God
‘And coming forward at that very time, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were awaiting the redemption of Jerusalem.’ (Luke 2:38)
In today’s Gospel, we meet the prophetess Anna. Not much is known about Anna, except that she is advanced in years, a widow and a holy woman, fasting and praying day and night. The Gospel of Luke reports she is 84, and along with the prophecy of Simeon, she too glimpses Israel’s redemption.
In the baby Jesus, Anna finds hope; God’s promise of the Messiah. The Gospel account describes Anna’s reaction to meeting the infant Jesus, ‘She gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were awaiting the redemption of Jerusalem’.
Lord, may we wait in joyful anticipation of your arrival as the prophetess Anna did, who rejoiced each day after encountering you.
