About Today Readings

Isaiah 42:1-7. The Lord is my light and my salvation – Ps 26(27):1-3, 13-14. John 12:1-11.

Let me be a light to all I meet

The reading from Isaiah is one of four songs of the Servant of the Lord, sometimes called the Suffering Servant. All four of them are included in Holy Week liturgies. The Servant is totally dedicated to the will of the Lord and has been created for this reason. God has formed him and appointed him as the ‘covenant of the people and light of the nations’. It is no wonder that Jesus saw himself in the Servant and that we continue today to recognise Christ in the description of the Servant. Through Holy Week we can increase our efforts to be more like the Servant; we can serve our neighbour with joy, we can open the eyes of those who are blind to Christ, we can free those who are captives of negativity and be a light to all those we meet.
