About Today Readings

St John Damascene

Isaiah 2:1–5. Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord – Psalm 121(122):1–2, 4–5, 6–9. Matthew 8:5–11.

Never in Israel have I found such faith

What were you doing, Lord, to speak
with this assassin of our tribe,
agree to visit him at home,
and cure his worthless foreign slave?

Then Jesus said, ‘Does not Your God
weep tears with slaves in such distress,
And warm to those who feel for them
regardless of their race and rank,

and you, would you have such great faith
to take my word that I would cure
your child unseen, untouched, with just
a distant word?’ How deep a faith was that!
