Philippians 2:1-4. In you, Lord, I have found my peace – Psalm 130(131). Luke 14:12-14.
A world of give and give
One way to read today’s Gospel reading is as challenging the logic of a world of ‘give and take’, where we do good by our neighbours because we hope good is done to us in return. Jesus tells the Pharisee who invites him to his home that by opening up his home to those who can never repay him, there will be even greater reward from God.
Those who have spent time serving the poor might add something else. The more we give of ourselves to the poor and move away from the logic of ‘give and take’, the more we receive back from our giving. Indeed, we might discover that we are blessed in this world, as much as we’re blessed in the next.
