About Today Readings

St Francis of Assisi

Jonah 1:1-2:1, 11. You will rescue my life from the pit, O Lord – Jonah 2:3-5, 8. Luke 10:25-37.

Which of these three… proved himself a neighbour?

The musical Come from Away is about the kindness of strangers. Following the attacks of 9/11 in 2001, all planes were grounded. Thirty-eight passenger jets were diverted from American and international airspace to remote Gander, Newfoundland. A town with a population of 9300 found itself playing host to about 6500 travellers and air crew, along with dogs, cats and two chimpanzees.

The people of Gander looked after the stranded travellers for five days, offering showers, beds and food. They donated bedding, clothes, nappies, medical supplies and telephones for travellers to call loved ones. They gave support and companionship, respecting religious and cultural traditions and sexual orientations. Enduring friendships formed and for the 10th anniversary, many of the guests returned. Though COVID has prevented a 20-year reunion, it is hoped to hold one next year. What would I do in such a situation?
