About Today Readings

Dedication of St Mary Major

Jeremiah 28:1-17. Teach me your laws, O Lord – Psalm 118(119):29, 43, 79-80, 95, 102. Matthew 14:13-21.

Give them something to eat yourselves

Grace: It was kind of you to feed the thousands of people Jesus, but I felt sorry for your disciples. Wasn’t it sensible of them to send the people away to their villages when you and the disciples had so little food? And surely they shouldn’t have pretended that they could feed the crowd.

Jesus: God doesn’t do ‘sensible’ when it comes to feeding the hungry and healing the sick. God wants us to try the impossible and will bless our efforts, as you saw. You don’t need to apologise for trying the impossible, do you?

Grace: The people were more like a church congregation than a crowd, Jesus, with the blessing and breaking of the bread. Is that how you saw them?

Jesus: Well, certainly the story was told for people who celebrated the Eucharist, Grace. And in it we celebrate that Christ has fed us in our hunger and our care for the hungry.
