Isaiah 35:1-10. Our God will come to save us! – Psalm 84(85):9-14. Luke 5:17-26.
Faith is a commitment to seek Jesus
The scene of healing in today’s Gospel is powerful and compelling. In the Gospel a man is paralysed and due to the crowd surrounding Jesus, he is remote, out of reach. It is the friends of the paralysed man who bring him before Jesus, with great effort.
Once in Jesus’ presence, holistic healing follows fast. Jesus often references the faith of the person he heals. Here he recognises a collective faith, ‘their faith’, that opens the possibility of an individual being freed. Freed from constraints of physical ailment, and even more extraordinarily, from the constraining nature of past sin.
What is this faith? In this scene it is not so much an intellectual ascent to codified propositions but a commitment to seek Jesus, to place ourselves, individually and communally, before the Lord.
