About Today Readings

St Anthony Zaccaria

Genesis 28:10-22. In you, my God, I place my trust – Ps 90(91):1-4, 14-15. Matthew 9:18-26.

Your faith has restored you to health

This passage begins with ‘While Jesus was saying this . . .’ and then describes how he was interrupted by a Jewish official who actually knelt before him to tell him his daughter had died. Jesus and his apostles immediately follow this man to his home. Desperation and grief can have unpredictable consequences and I am sure this official would never have imagined himself kneeling before Jesus. Then, as Jesus was walking, he felt someone touch his cloak and he knew what was happening. More so, Jesus understood the woman’s display of courage along with desperate hope, built on faith. How many times have we desperately begged Jesus for healing for us or others? How many times have we knelt before him or reached out in our hearts to touch his cloak? How many times have we experienced Jesus hearing us, Jesus noticing our courage and Jesus being moved by our pleas? Jesus you are all powerful, all truth and all love. Help us to notice the walk you take into our homes when we beg you to come, and sustain us with the faith to touch your cloak. Hold us close until we calmly settle in your love, while we wait for the result of our prayer.
