Who is our neighbour?

Pope Francis wrote about the story of the Good Samaritan. If you read his beautiful letter Fratelli Tutti, you will find that the theme of caring for others goes right back to a callous question that Cain asked in Genesis, ‘Am I my brother’s keeper?’ Sometimes we like to think of the people in Jesus’ story as just fictional characters designed to make a point. But Pope Francis asks, ‘Who do you identify with?’

It’s a good question, and it asks us to be honest. We have all walked past trouble. On the other hand, on better days, we have all tried to help a stranger. And let’s not forget that there are probably days when we have been like the stranger left to die by the side of the road. We may even be like the innkeeper, perplexed by the goodness of others. The life of faith calls us to daily honesty. Are we indifferent or engaged? Do we have cold hearts or warms hands? Who is our neighbour? It may be the least neighbourly person we know.
