God’s saving mercy

Here in Saint Paul’s first letter to the Corinthian faithful we find a difficult and profound implication of his teaching. Paul makes clear that the Church endures as Christ’s body on earth. We are members in him, knitted into his body, our community, in Baptism. Responding to a moral scandal among the Corinthians, Paul draws our attention to a consequence of this radical claim, specifically the impossibility of merely personal sin. In his response Paul clearly sees this matter as much more than a personal one, although he is clear that the offender’s soul is in jeopardy. These sins harm the whole Church, and not only because they attract scandal. A body cannot be truly healthy while part of it is wounded. Thankfully Paul also points to God’s saving mercy. Even if we have become a wound in his body, we can always reach out and receive healing from Jesus.
