St Maria Goretti
Hosea 2:16-18, 21-22. The Lord is kind and merciful – Ps 144(145):2-9. Matthew 9:18-26.
Focus on the vulnerable
Today’s readings are appropriate for the feast of St Maria Goretti, and a reminder that Christ is there for those who suffer. We don’t know how old the daughter is in today’s reading, but we can imagine she may have been like Maria – a girl who suffered greatly and was taken before her time.
The Church is at its best when it is focused on the most vulnerable, and at its worst when it is focused on itself – as many who have been abused in church contexts would know.
We pray that the story of Maria – and Christ’s example in today’s Gospel readings – might inspire us to refocus our efforts as a Church in supporting and protecting the most vulnerable people in our midst and addressing the wrongs that have been done.
