About Today Readings

Acts 16:11-15. The Lord takes delight in his people – Psalm 149:1-6, 9. John 15:26 – 16:4.

We are called to share the Good News

Lydia’s conversion offers a beautiful picture of the witness offered by the early apostles. She listens, but it is the Lord who opens her heart to the words of Paul. She is graced, both by the presence of the apostles sharing the Good News and by an openness to their words. Maybe she was always generous, but her experience of baptism leads her to want to share hospitality with her fellow Christians. There is a sense of the cycle of receiving and giving undergirding today’s first reading.

In the Gospel, Jesus says to his disciples, ‘And you too will be witnesses’. Just as Paul heard this call to witness, and Lydia heard it in turn, so we hear the call in our lives. Each of us is called to share the Good News in deeds and words. In this way the reciprocity of the Good News undergirds our lives.
