How happy are the poor in spirit
When Jesus first delivered the Sermon on the Mount to the people of Galilee, he presented some radical ideas, advocating for the weak and the poor in a world that valued strength and riches. Through our Living Word, the Beatitudes still speak to us today, turning what the world values on its head and showing us instead what God values.
In a world where it is fashionable to join the online pile-on of criticism when somebody expresses the wrong opinion and then cancel all who associate with them, Jesus says ‘Blessed are the merciful’. In a world where folks jostle to boast of their achievements in edited online versions of their lives, Jesus says ‘Blessed are the humble’.
There is a difference between the ways of the world and the ways of God. Spending time in prayer and with the Word helps me to remember this and to recalibrate my compass.
