About Today Readings

1 Corinthians 5:1-8. Lead me in your justice, Lord – Ps 5:5-7, 12. Luke 6:6-11.

The scribes and pharisees were watching him

Lex: In the Gospels the Pharisees were a pain in the neck, I know, but weren’t they right to insist on obeying the Law? It came from God, your Father, after all, Jesus, and faithfulness to what God asks shows how much we love.

Jesus: That’s true in general, Lex. But look at this from the point of view of the man with the withered hand. Would he experience God’s love through the person who cured him or the one who told him it was the Sabbath? And if we focus on people who break laws, don’t we risk becoming prune-faced and unloving?

Lex: I can see that, Jesus. Still, if everyone decides for themselves whether to obey God’s Law, Jesus, won’t people soon forget about God?

Jesus: That can happen, Lex, but wouldn’t God be happier to see you cure a withered hand than live with a withered heart?
