The Annunciation

Isaiah 7:10. Here am I, Lord; I come to do your will – Psalm 39(40):7-11. Hebrews 10:40-10. Luke 1:26-38.

The Word became flesh

Mary says ‘Yes’ and the angel departed from her. But other angels would surely have been close, because now the Word of God found a home in her.

A few years ago, I visited that small chapel under the basilica of the Annunciation in Nazareth where tradition holds the Annunciation took place. On the front of a small altar are the Latin words Verbum caro hic factum est (The Word was made flesh here.) The word hic (here) sent shivers down my back. My visit was before all the current troubles exploded in that land we call ‘Holy’. Once where angels crowded there were tourists galore. With the Word becoming flesh, all flesh was now enveloped by the Word. The implications of Mary’s ‘yes’ will fully emerge at the end of time when the risen Christ will hand back the whole of creation, and all nations, to his Father and ours.
