About Today Readings

Baptism of The Lord.

Isaiah 55:1-11. Isaiah 12:2-6. 1 John 5:19. Mark 1:7-11.

You will draw water joyfully from the springs of salvation—Isaiah 12:2-6.

Today’s gospel depicts an image of the Trinity at a most significant moment in Jesus’ life, his baptism.

Jesus is called ‘Son’ and ‘Beloved’. The first reading tells of the riches of God’s love.

Our response is free, but we are reminded to ‘seek the Lord while he is still to be found’, and that God’s ways are not our ways. It also speaks of the invincible power of God’s word.

The second reading reminds us that we, too, can be children of God in Jesus. It reminds us of what loving God really means.

Thank you, Lord, for all that your words tell us. Thank you for the wonderful example of St John the Baptist. Help us to be open to your presence in our daily life, and to put you always first in our thoughts and actions.
