About Today Readings

Hosea 2:16-18, 21-22. The Lord is kind and merciful – Psalm 144(145):2-9. Matthew 9:18-26.

Jesus came to serve

This is another day in the life of the Lord, according to Matthew. He came to serve and not to be served. Matthew’s rich descriptive narrative of Jesus’ journey to raise the little girl to life is interrupted by the encounter with the haemorrhaging woman. Towards the end of that day’s journey the crowd laugh at Jesus. The girl is asleep, not dead. In Magdala a retreat centre has recently been built containing a beautiful chapel overlooking the Sea of Galilee. A side chapel has a magnificent mural behind the altar reflecting the encounter with the haemorrhaging woman. The painting is done from ankle height. We see massive, sandalled feet and soft garments falling to just above the ankles. And through the crowd of feet a finger probes to touch the bottom of one garment. A spark of light and all is well again with the woman who owns that finger.
