St Teresa Benedicta of the Cross
Deuteronomy 10:12-22. Praise the Lord, Jerusalem – Ps 147:12-15, 19-20. Matthew 17:22-27.
The Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords
In the first reading, Moses is challenging the self-deception of the Israelites. Moses speaks plainly. The Lord your God is not, like you, partial, open to bribes, unjust to the poor, unkind to foreigners, and forgetful of past generosity. He is supreme over all, and ‘the Lord’s love was so great that he chose you instead of any other people and you are still his chosen people.’ He goes on: ‘The Lord is great, and mighty, and he is to be obeyed.’ Last year showed us plainly through the spread of the pandemic that it was the aged and frail, the battlers with precarious employment, and the foreigners in our midst whose urgent basic needs for food, shelter and support we overlooked. They suffered first and most. Today, let’s pray and give thanks for those like Moses who bring uncomfortable truths to our attention, and remind us that from those to whom much is given, much is expected.
