Immaculate Conception

Genesis 3:9-15, 20. Sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvellous deeds – Psalm 97(98):1-4. Ephesians 1:3-6, 11-12. Luke 1:26-38.

For he chose us in him before the creation of the world

What a work of blessing and magnificence that God the Father chose us to be united with his Son before we were ever to inhabit the planet with the gift of the life we are living.

This predestination is a spiritual gift which we should use wisely and well. If we have been chosen, we need to do something with this for those around us, our neighbours. Today we also remember the gift of Mary to the world; she of immaculate conception and sinlessness; a mother to Jesus and the disciples; a gentle and venerated guide and counsellor over the centuries to all who have prayed to her, confided in her, asked for her help.

Mary’s love for her mortal and divine Son was boundless and abundant, a love to break through human history, a love that embraces all the sons and daughters of the Church.
