About Today Readings

Tobit 12:1, 5-15, 20. Blessed be God, who lives forever – Tobit 13:2, 6-8. Mark 12:38-44.

There is no need to exploit or judge

I am reminded by this Gospel of how ‘rule-following’ as a demonstration of piety can be harmful to others – the hypocrisy of demonstrating status, arrogance and wealth at the expense of those who are vulnerable and/or excluded – wasn’t and isn’t the way of Christ. As we come to know more about our humanity through science and relationships there is no need to show status, no need for one person to see themselves as better than another, no need to exploit or judge. This is what Jesus was on about way back then too. It is disappointing to see and know that there are brothers and sisters in our community who still act as the scribes in this Gospel do, for them to not realise that this causes harm and prevents people’s journey to flourishing in God’s love.
