St Benedict
Isaiah 6:1-8. The Lord is king; he is robed in majesty – Ps 92(93):1-2, 5. Matthew 10:24-33.
Here I am. Send me
The excerpt from Isaiah is grand in its telling when the seraphim takes the hot coal and sears his unclean lips. This act takes the prophet’s sins away. The Lord, robed in glory, then says, ‘Whom shall I send?’ And Isaiah replies instantly and ardently, ‘Here I am. Send me’.
This reminds me of one of my favourite hymns, ‘Here I am, Lord’, which always seems to bring me to tears, especially when I hear it sung with the force of faith and conviction. What are our lives for? We are sent to do our best for God and for others. It is our mission.
How often do we say, ‘Here I am, send me’ and follow through? We have a vast litany of saints who did just that. God sees even the smallest effort when we live out his message, when we send love in words and actions to others.
