About Today Readings

Deuteronomy 26:16-19. Happy are those who follow the law of the Lord! – Psalm 118(119):1-2, 4-5, 7-8. Matthew 5:43-48.

Make the choice to love

Often we hear in the scriptures how the law of the Lord needs to be written in our hearts, part of our very being. All the readings today emphasise this point. Deuteronomy insists that we must keep the law with our whole beings. The experience of the Hebrews was that if they kept the law they lived in peace, everyone was cared for. If they ignored the law they fell into ruin because they were absorbed by greed. The psalm joyfully proclaims the result of following God’s law; to live peacefully and happily. Jesus adds another layer. He asks us to love our enemies as well, to love as the Father loves, to be perfect in love as the Father is perfect. However, we all fail at times and acknowledge that God alone is perfect (consoling when we make major blunders!). What we must aim to do every day, all day is to base our lives on the choice to love. It will make a difference.
