Action is the foundation of faith
‘Why do you call me “Lord, Lord!” and do not do what I say?’ asks Jesus pointedly in today’s Gospel. Jesus makes it clear: the foundation of faith is action, not passive words nor mere appearance. As usual, his imagery is striking: one man, he says, digs down to rock and builds his house on a solid foundation. This is the person who acts on Jesus’ commandments, especially – no doubt – his commandment to ‘love one another as I have loved you!’ The other builds his house just on the soil, superficially; his house naturally washes away when floods come, just as some give up their faith when persecution comes. So interesting that Luke, who accompanied Paul, records this comment. Often, some Christians have argued that Paul rejected works in favour of a sort of disembodied faith. Clearly this is not the impression Luke got from him.
