Do we recognise Christ?
The disciples’ question about Elijah reminds me how often we look for signs that fit our expectations, missing or even rejecting the quiet truth that already exists. I sit with this discomfort, that God’s messengers are not always welcomed even by those waiting for them. In this Advent season, I’m drawn to the tension between promise and pain. The child we await is also the young man who will suffer for all of humanity. The manger and the cross are carved from the same wood. Do we recognise Christ when he comes in unexpected ways, in the poor, the lonely or the inconvenient moment? Let’s pray for the grace to see and respond to the signs of our times. Like the disciples, may we bring our questions to Jesus and in the stillness of prayer, listen for the whisper of truth that restores all things.
