Mary stored up all these things in her heart

Plenty has been written about the transition from childhood to young adulthood – how teenagers need the space to grow and express their individuality. Conversely, there is often little acknowledgment of the transition parents go through as their mischievous but delightful child becomes sullen, moody and inclined to think anything their parents say is either useless or specifically designed to annoy.

When Jesus found himself in the Temple, impressing the elders with his knowledge, he was growing into the wise teacher he would become. However, his thoughtlessness when it came to the anguish of his parents showed that adulthood was still some way off. The phrase that ‘he went back to Nazareth with his parents and lived under their authority’ is a clue to the importance of a steady and loving home base in allowing young people to grow. Let us pray for all parents.
