Hosea 5:15 – 6:6. It is steadfast love, not sacrifice, that God desires – Ps 50(51):3-4, 18-21. Luke 18:9-14.
‘God be merciful’
Jesus’ parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector cuts through any self-assured posturing that might tempt us to exalt ourselves before others. While the Pharisee stands tall, listing his achievements, the tax collector stands apart and quietly whispers a simple petition, ‘God, be merciful on me, a sinner’. His humility and honesty became his strength. Australians are fully aware of tall poppies, yet the allure to measure our worth through comparison remains. Jesus reminds us that God sees the heart, not the performance. The one who kneels in truth stands tall in God’s grace. St Augustine reminds us that if we wish to rise, ‘begin by descending. You plan a tower that will pierce the clouds? Lay first the foundation of humility.’
