About Today Readings

Holy Saturday.

‘After the sabbath, and towards dawn on the first day of the week, Mary of Magdala and the other Mary went to visit the sepulchre.’ Matthew 28:1

Everything is on hold for me on Holy Saturday. The sanctuary is deserted. There is darkness all over my earth. Fools watch football, go shopping, eat chocolate, follow the Easter bunny. Such nonsense! All I can see is an entire universe teetering between cruel death and ecstatic love. I simmer with anger. Jesus would smile at the human folly, but I am disconsolate with the loss of my beloved. I want nothing of the cheap substitutes for love in this wastrel world. I cannot sleep or eat. I walk in shadows. I am desperate for a miracle. I wait, weeping at the tomb of my beloved. Lord, forgive my anger. I am grieving. Help me see your light rising in my darkness.
