The Almighty has done great things for me

‘Mary the Radical’ isn’t much considered in devotions to Our Lady, but it’s hard to ignore the political resonance of her words when we read through today’s Gospel reading.

In describing how God will ‘cast down the mighty’, ‘lift up the lowly’, ‘fill the hungry with good things’, and send the rich away empty, she almost sounds like she’s running a political campaign.

Throughout history, these words have helped shape not only our understanding of Christ’s mission, but also our own mission as a Church. They are a reminder that Christ was sent not to make us comfortable in our place in the world, but to confront us in our comfort. God’s attention, and our attention, should be on the lowly and the hungry.

Let us pray today in thanks for Mary’s radical discipleship of Jesus. May she continue to inspire our Church.
