About Today Readings

Genesis 3:9-24. In every age, O Lord, you have been our refuge – Psalm 89(90):2-6, 12-13. Mark 8:1-10.

Physical and spiritual care

In today’s Gospel, the phrase ‘the people ate and were satisfied’ leapt out at me. It doesn’t say, ‘the people ate, and they had had enough’. It was beyond that; it was satisfaction which is so much more. The people had been with Jesus for three days. He had been feeding their souls with his teaching for those three days and he knew that he had to send them on their way. Before he did, he fed their bodies as well and they were satisfied.

This is a teacher who cares for his followers, not just wanting them to understand his father’s message but knowing that they need physical care as well.
