About Today Readings

1 Kings 19:19-21. You are my inheritance, O Lord – Psalm 15(16):1-2, 5, 7-10. Matthew 5:33-37.

Trust and trustworthiness

The Gospel today is a timely reminder that we need to be true to our word. Trust is such a precious thing and yet, once lost, it is so hard to get back. For people who have trusted and been hurt, the courage to trust again is so hard. Today, Jesus reminds us of this and simply says, ‘Be true. If you are someone that people can trust, you do not need to swear on anything; your word is enough’. Can we live by this? Can we trust others to also live by this, and what does it mean if we cannot?
