About Today Readings

Deuteronomy 26:16-19. Happy are those who follow the law of the Lord! – Ps 118(119):1-2, 4-5, 7-8. Matthew 5:43-48.

Through God all things are possible

Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you . . . Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect. What a seemingly impossible ask. With all our human foibles, how can we be perfect? And how can we love our enemies? It is hard enough sometimes to love our neighbour, to love those whom we care about and like, let alone those who are openly hostile to us or are persecuting us. Love, in and of itself, can seem impossible. The Gospels talk of agape love, referring to a love that is sacrificial and that intentionally seeks the other’s highest good, not asking for anything in return. We can only love like this when we place ourselves in God’s hands and remain connected to the vine. We cannot love like this by relying on our own resources alone. But this is not what God asks of us. We are invited to remain united with God so that God can love through us. And through God, all things are possible. Even loving our enemies.
