Wisdom 18:14-16; 19:6-9. Remember the marvels the Lord has done – Ps 104(105):2-3, 36-37, 42-43. Luke 18:1-8.
Where have we been unjust?
Today’s Gospel reading features a corrupt judge and a widow. The widow, who was in need of justice, was forced to go to him and plead her case. We are told he initially refused, but eventually to stop being pestered, he agreed to do what was right. Jesus then compares that unjust judge to God, and says that God will not put us off when we cry out but will respond to our cries for justice. I don’t know about you, but sometimes it feels like I’ve been crying out for justice, and meanwhile wars continue to happen, and children continue to die of starvation. But how persistently do I cry out for peace, and am I open to being changed by God and acting with peace in all aspects of my own life? And what if instead we are the judge and God is the widow? Where have we been unjust in not listening to the pleas of the poor? May we always say yes to the most loving option.
