Holy Saturday (Easter Vigil)

God dispels the darkness of our minds and hearts
No matter how young or old we are, the lighting of the Easter fire stirs the heart. Sometimes the fragrance wafts inside to people gathered in the dark, waiting to celebrate once again the source of all their hope. Smell often bring memories with it. In this year’s Easter Gospel, angels say to the women ‘Remember what he told you.’ The Easter vigil is full of powerful memories. We hear readings from the whole of our faith tradition, culminating in the discovery of the empty tomb.
A candle is lit from the fire. We hear the words ‘may the light of Christ, rising in glory, dispel the darkness of our minds and hearts.’ The women are terrified and nobody wants to believe them. Their story is dismissed as ‘pure nonsense.’ We all need God to dispel the darkness of our minds and hearts every day of our lives. That is why we will be here again next year and the year after.
